Authority Honored for 2012 Community and Economic Development Initiatives
(Albany, NY) – The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) was recognized by The Chamber of Schenectady County Board of Directors and membership as the 2012 Corporation of the Year. The award was presented to CDTA at their Annual Business Awards Banquet at Glen Sanders Mansion on October 23, 2012.
Seven individuals, businesses and organizations were chosen as honorees for being successful in their endeavors while having a positive effect on the economic development in our community and the quality of life of its residents.
Over the last few years, CDTA has launched many service improvements and innovative partnerships within Schenectady County to improve transit connections.
Earlier this year, CDTA entered into a partnership with the Schenectady County District Attorney’s office and the City of Schenectady to install security cameras near BusPlus stations to enhance public safety and security. More than a dozen wireless real time video cameras were added to Schenectady’s program for a total of more than 100 in the network.
BusPlus premium limited stop service was introduced in April 2011 with downtown Schenectady as a main anchor for Upstate New York’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line. Within months of operation, ridership increased 20% on the Route 5 corridor.
In 2011, CDTA began working with Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) on a pilot program to provided unlimited rides to students through a universal access partnership. The partnership reaped more than a 40% ridership increase during the first 6 months of operation and prompted SCCC and CDTA to continue the partnership for the current academic year.
In 2010, Schenectady County routes were revamped to provide better connections between neighborhoods, employment centers, educational institutions and shopping and entertainment destinations. Ridership on these routes has increased 40% two years later.
CDTA is also the lead in the Schenectady Train Station renovation project, with station design currently at 70% completion.
