CDTA GOES BLUE TO PROMOTE COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING AND FREE SCREENINGS AT LOCAL BUSPLUS STATIONS

Go Blue

March 21, 2013

(Albany, NY) The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) is proud to once again partner with the Cancer Services Program of Albany and Rensselaer Counties to promote Main Streets Go Blue. Main Streets Go Blue is a statewide initiative to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, which can be prevented with recommended screenings. CDTA is teaming up with the Cancer Services Program of Albany and Rensselaer Counties and other local community partners to promote colorectal cancer awareness and free colorectal cancer screenings. During the month of March, volunteers will distribute FREE easy-to-use take home screening kits at major CDTA bus stops for uninsured residents ages 50+.

Go Blue ambassadors will be stationed at CDTA’s BusPlus Station located at Lark and Washington on March 22nd from 4:00-5:30pm. The ambassadors will then visit the West Mall BusPlus Station on Central Avenue next to Westgate (Hannaford) on March 25th from 4:00-5:30pm. Finally, they will be at the Uncle Sam Bus Station in Downtown Troy on March 26th from 4:30 – 5:30p.m. CDTA customers and the general public are invited to talk with Go Blue ambassadors about colorectal cancer prevention and pick up a free kit. Women aged 40 and older can also schedule appointments for breast and cervical cancer screening. Un-insured men and women who complete cancer screening through the Cancer Services Program may receive a free CDTA Day pass.

In recognition of colorectal cancer awareness month in March, a portion of Central Avenue and Downtown Troy will be decorated in blue, which is the nationally recognized color for colon cancer awareness. According to a 2011-2013 Colorectal Cancer Facts & Figures report from the American Cancer Society, in both men and women, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, but it doesn’t have to be. Colorectal cancer can be prevented when polyps are found and removed before they turn into cancer. When diagnosed early, treatment is highly effective.
