2012 Initiative Offers Environmental Benefits and chance to get ‘connected’ online

(Albany, NY) – The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) has joined other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the seventh annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 21. The public is invited to show their support for public transit in CDTA’s first ‘Dump the Pump’ Social Media Scavenger Hunt featuring $1000 of CDTA bus passes. DTP clues can be tracked through CDTA’s social media outlets to win CDTA passes and the chance to take home the Summer Fun Connections Grand prize. Here’s how it works:

On Thursday, June 21st between 6am and 6pm, CDTA passes will be hidden around various CDTA locations in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties. Customers will be able to find clues by following CDTA on twitter (@cdta) or liking the CDTA facebook page (facebook.com/CDTAiride). DTP players who find passes should take a photo at the location and post it with their reason for dumping the pump for the chance to pick up the grand prize “Summer Fun Connections Package”. DTP players should use #CDTAclue to stay in the game.

The DTP Player with the best picture/story about why they chose to Dump The Pump will take home the grand prize featuring a summer’s worth of 31-Day Rolling pass (3 months), a four pack of Tri-City ValleyCats tickets, four tickets to CountryFest at the Times UnionCenter on July 7th,two passes to attend New York Giants Training Camp and a pair of tickets to see the New York Yankees. The grand prize winner’s story will be featured on CDTA’s website and social media outlets.

National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transit and save money. Riding CDTA is an economical way to save, particularly when gas prices are high. The latest APTA Transit Savings Report shows that a two-person household that downsizes to one car can save – on the average – about $10,000 a year. APTA found that a person with a 20-mile round trip commute who switches to public transit can reduce their daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds per day, or more than 4,800 pounds a year.
