CDTA "Goes Blue" to Raise Awareness for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March 20, 2014

ALBANY, NY- The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) is proud to once again partner with Cancer Services Program of Albany and Rensselaer Counties to promote “Main Streets Go Blue.” Main Streets Go Blue is a statewide initiative to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, which can be prevented with recommended screenings.

According to a new report out by the American Cancer Society, the rate at which people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the US has dropped 30% in the last 10 years for those aged 50 years and older. Researchers credit the drop to more people getting recommended screening tests.

During the month of March, volunteers will distribute FREE easy-to-use take home screening kits at major CDTA bus stops for uninsured residents ages 50 and older. “Go Blue” ambassadors will be stationed at CDTA’s BusPlus Stations at various locations around the Capital Region over the next two weeks. CDTA customers and the general public are invited to talk with ambassadors about colorectal cancer prevention and the uninsured can pick up a free screening kit. Uninsured women aged 40 and older can also schedule appointments for breast and cervical cancer screening. Uninsured men and women who complete cancer screenings through the Cancer Services Program will receive a free CDTA day pass, while supplies last.

In recognition of colorectal cancer awareness month, a portion of Central Avenue and Downtown Troy will be decorated in blue, which is the nationally recognized color for colon cancer awareness.

CDTA will be hosting several screening locations in the Capital Region.
